I'm blogging from the O'Reilly Emerging Tech conference in San Diego. Here are my thoughts on Rael Dornfest/Tim O'Reilly's keynote:
- The movement toward being Citzen Engineers -- hacking your TiVos.
* Hackers is a pseudonym for "early adopters", not a nefarious designation.
* Entrepreneurs are change agents.
* Open source products are being used as the underlying software in almost everything we do on the net. Yet most people don't see them. Interoperabilty will become an interesting issue as OS and proprietary systems on the web continue to integrate.
* Contributions via social software is much like contirbutions to Linux. User reviews on amazon, testimonials on friendster; harnising the power of the user community. Ebay, Google.
* Mapquest is a killer app. Everyone uses it. But no social software elements. so see collaborative mapping workshop. Where Cory bought his water. Social anotations of maps. photos of location. reviews. metadata. other. The real and the virtual annotated graphically and leveraged. Georanking/geohacking.
who will own this?
* Meetup is social software without product, but still social organizing. Could be linked to mapping services.
* Moveon.org is social software too.
* Ebay now the bluebook for products
